Overview

## What we build in timber
These are the features that give a garden its structure: sleeper edging holding a lawn or gravel line, raised beds at a height you can plant without kneeling, and planters sized to the space they sit in rather than bought to fit approximately.

Everything is built on site from treated timber, cut to the actual dimensions of your garden, which is how you get a border that follows a curve or a bed that fits an awkward corner exactly.

The construction detail is what matters: solid corner fixings, a lining where soil sits against timber, and drainage at the base so water leaves instead of standing.

### Who it is for, and when

- Edging to hold artificial grass, gravel or bark cleanly
- Raised beds for vegetables, herbs and cutting flowers
- Accessible waist-height beds that need no kneeling
- Retaining low level changes on a gently sloping plot
- Planters for patios, courtyards and balcony-style spaces
- Screening and structure around seating areasBook a free site visit

What it costs to ignore

## Why timber garden features rot early
Timber in the garden fails at the points nobody looks at. Untreated cut ends wick water up the grain. Soil packed directly against boards with no liner keeps them permanently wet. And a bed with no drainage at the base becomes a tank that holds water against the timber and drowns the plants at the same time.

Corners are the other weak point. Beds and planters butted together and screwed through the face pull apart as the timber moves seasonally, so the joints open and the whole thing racks out of square within a couple of years.

Off-the-shelf kits bring their own problem: they rarely fit. You end up with awkward slivers of gravel or grass around the edges, or a bed set forward of a fence with a dead gap behind it that fills with weeds and nothing can reach to weed.

### Common mistakes we get called out to fix

- Leaving cut ends untreated so water gets into the grain
- Soil packed straight against timber with no liner
- No drainage at the base, so the bed holds water
- Weak butt-jointed corners that rack and open up
- Beds too wide to reach into from either side
- Fitting standard kits into a garden that is not standard

Our process

## How we run a timber borders, raised beds & planters job
The same sequence every time, so you know what is happening and when.

- Step 1

### Free site visit
We measure the space, check levels and drainage, and talk through heights, widths and what you want to grow or hold back.

- Step 2

### Fixed-price quote
One written price for timber, fixings, lining, drainage, any groundwork and taking the waste away.

- Step 3

### Setting out and base prep
Positions marked, ground levelled and firmed, and bearing prepared so nothing settles unevenly once it is loaded with soil.

- Step 4

### Construction
Treated timber cut and built on site with solid corner fixings, cut ends treated, and levels checked along every run.

- Step 5

### Lining, drainage and fill
Lining fitted where soil meets timber, drainage formed at the base, and beds filled to level where that is part of the job.

- Step 6

### Tidy up and handover
Offcuts and waste away, everything swept down, and we walk it with you. Balance due on completion.

What you get

## The difference it makes

### Made to fit
Built on site to your dimensions, so borders follow the real line of the garden with no awkward gaps.

### Easier to garden
Beds set at a height you can plant and weed without kneeling, and narrow enough to reach across.

### Built to last
Treated timber, treated cut ends, lined faces and drainage at the base: the four things that stop early rot.

### Clean edges
Sleeper edging holds grass, gravel and bark in a crisp line instead of letting it creep and mix.

### Structure and screening
Height and planting where you want privacy, without closing the whole garden in.

### Part of the wider job
Quoted alongside paving, lawn, fencing and decking as one job with one team.

In detail

## Sleepers, heights, linings and drainage
The specification decisions behind timber features that stay square and sound.

### Sleeper edging and borders
A sleeper or timber edge does two jobs: it holds a material back and it draws a line. Around artificial grass it gives the perimeter something solid to be fixed to; around gravel or bark it stops the material migrating onto paving and lawn.

Runs are set level or stepped deliberately with the slope, fixed to concealed stakes or posts rather than relying on the weight of the timber, so a long edge stays straight instead of bowing.

### Raised bed heights and widths
Height is set by what you are growing and how you want to work. Ankle to knee height suits shrubs and low planting; waist height removes kneeling altogether and suits anyone with a bad back or limited mobility.

Width is the part people get wrong. A bed you can only reach from one side should stay narrow enough to reach the back comfortably; one you can walk around can be wider. Getting that wrong turns the middle of the bed into dead space.

### Lining, drainage and soil
Where soil sits against timber we fit a lining so the boards are not permanently wet, while leaving the base free-draining. Beds get drainage at the bottom so water passes through rather than filling the box.

On heavy clay ground the bed needs somewhere for that water to go, which is where our own groundwork and drainage work comes in.

### Planters and freestanding boxes
Patio and courtyard planters are built to the space and the plant: enough depth for roots, drainage holes clear of the paving, and feet or bearers so the base is not sitting in a puddle and staining the slabs.

Larger planters can double as screening or a low division between a seating area and the rest of the garden: structure without the enclosed feeling of a full fence.

Common questions

## Timber Borders, Raised Beds & Planters questions, answered straight
Anything not covered here, ask Shaun Brickell directly on 07757 559036.

How much do raised beds or planters cost?It depends on size, height, how many, and whether groundwork, lining and soil fill are included. We price on site, the visit and quote are free, and the price is fixed.

What timber do you use?Treated timber and sleepers suited to ground contact, with every cut end treated before fixing, because that is where water normally gets in.

How high should a raised bed be?Low beds suit shrubs and general planting; waist height means no kneeling at all, which is what most people ask for once they have tried it. We set heights on site against how you want to work.

Can you fill the beds with soil too?Yes, filling can be included in the fixed price, just tell us at the site visit what you plan to grow so the depth and fill suit it.

Can timber edging be used around artificial grass?Yes, and it works well; it gives the grass perimeter something solid to be fixed to, which is the detail that keeps edges from lifting.

What guarantee comes with the work?A 10-year guarantee on our workmanship, and we carry £2 million public liability cover on every job.

How do payments work?A 25% deposit secures your slot and covers materials. The balance is due on completion, once you have seen the finished job and you are happy with it.

Which areas do you cover? We work across Bolton, Horwich, Westhoughton, Farnworth, Kearsley, Little Lever, Blackrod, Bury, Radcliffe, Atherton, Chorley and the wider Greater Manchester area.
