That is why it needs the same base build-up as a patio, not a strip of slabs bedded on sand: excavation, compacted stone, a full laying bed, and a restrained edge on both sides. Width and route are the design decisions. A path two people can pass on, taking the line people actually walk, gets used; a narrow path taking a decorative curve gets cut across, and the grass beside it wears out. Slabs laid straight onto soil settle in the wheel line of a bin or a barrow, joints open, weeds take hold, and within two winters the path is uneven enough to trip on in the dark. Side passages are the worst affected. They are narrow, shaded, often the route rainwater takes from two roofs, and frequently have no fall at all, so water sits, algae grows and the surface becomes genuinely slippery. In detail ## Routes, widths, materials and drainage The detail that decides whether a path still looks right in ten years. ### Route and width We look for the desire line first: the route people already take across the grass. Paving that line means the path gets used and the lawn beside it survives. A main route wants enough width for two people to pass or a wheelie bin to be pulled without clipping the edges; secondary garden walkways can be narrower. Stepping stones set into a lawn are a good option where a full path would dominate a small garden. Set flush and on their own bases, they stay level and can be mown or brushed over. ### Materials for paths Porcelain gives a crisp, contemporary line with tight joints and almost no staining, and washes clean easily, useful on a front path. Natural sandstone suits traditional houses and gravel borders. Block paving handles curves and gentle level changes better than large-format slabs and can take vehicle weight where a path crosses a drive. Surface texture is the safety decision.
