Overview

## What fencing installation involves
A fence is only as good as what holds it up. The work is in setting the posts: digging to a sufficient depth for the panel height and exposure, keeping the line and spacing true, and fixing everything so wind load transfers into the ground rather than into a rocking post.

We install close-board, feather-edge, panel and picket fencing, with gravel boards where timber would otherwise sit in wet soil, and gates hung to swing clear and latch properly. Heights and styles are chosen for what the fence is for: security, privacy, screening or simply marking a boundary.

Because we also do the groundwork, sloping runs, level changes and retaining are resolved on the same visit rather than left as a gap under the panels.

### Who it is for, and when

- Leaning, gappy or storm-damaged fence lines
- Gardens needing privacy or screening from neighbours
- Households with dogs or young children needing a secure boundary
- Sloping boundaries that need stepping or retaining
- New gates, side access and bin gates
- Anyone finishing a makeover or new lawn properlyBook a free site visit

What it costs to ignore

## What a failing fence actually costs
A fence with under-set posts moves a little in every gale, and every movement widens the hole around it. Rails work loose, boards gap, and one bad night takes down a run that was already loose. The bill is then a full replacement rather than a repair, plus whatever the panels landed on.

Security and boundaries are the real exposure. A gap at the bottom is how a dog gets out and how a garden stops being a safe place for children. A collapsed boundary can also become an argument with a neighbour about who pays for what.

Rot starts where water cannot escape, around a post base, at the foot of a board sitting in soil, at end grain nobody treated. Get those details right and the same timber lasts years longer.

### Common mistakes we get called out to fix

- Posts set too shallow for the panel height and exposure
- Reusing old posts behind new panels
- No gravel board, so timber sits in wet soil
- Post spacing that does not work out across the run
- Following the ground on a slope instead of stepping the run
- Untreated cut ends and unsealed end grain

Our process

## How we run a fencing installation job
The same sequence every time, so you know what is happening and when.

- Step 1

### Free site visit
We check the boundary line, ground conditions, existing posts, levels and exposure, then talk through fence style, height and any gates.

- Step 2

### Fixed-price quote
One written price covering removal and disposal of the old fence, posts, timber, fixings, gates and labour. It does not change once we start.

- Step 3

### Strip out and set out
Old timber out and away, the line pulled straight, and post positions marked so spacing works across the full run.

- Step 4

### Posts set
Holes dug to depth for the panel height and exposure, posts set plumb and to line, and left to gain strength before the fence is loaded.

- Step 5

### Rails, boards and gates
Gravel boards, rails and boarding fixed with the run stepped where the ground falls, cut ends treated, and gates hung to swing clear and latch cleanly.

- Step 6

### Tidy up and handover
Offcuts and old timber taken away, ground raked off, and we walk the line with you. Balance due on completion with your 10-year workmanship guarantee.

What you get

## The difference it makes

### Stays standing
Posts dug to depth for the height and exposure, so a gale moves the trees and not your boundary.

### Secure and private
No gaps at the bottom for a dog to work at, and heights chosen for the privacy you actually want.

### Straight lines
The run set out and pulled true before a single board goes on, and stepped properly where the ground falls.

### Timber that lasts
Gravel boards keeping boarding out of wet soil and cut ends treated, which is where rot normally starts.

### Gates that work
Hung to swing clear of paving and planting, latching properly in winter as well as in July.

### One team, one price
Groundwork, retaining and fencing quoted and done together, with one number to call afterwards.

In detail

## Styles, heights, posts and sloping boundaries
The specification decisions that decide how long a fence lasts and how it looks doing it.

### Choosing a fence style
Close-board and feather-edge give the most privacy and the most robust boundary, with no gaps and a solid face on your side. Panel fencing is quicker and cheaper across a long run and easier to replace section by section. Picket and decorative fencing suits front gardens where the job is to define a boundary rather than to screen it.

Style also decides wind load. A solid fence catches everything a Pennine gale throws at it, which is exactly why the posts and their depth matter more on close-board than on an open picket run.

### Heights, privacy and neighbours
Height is a balance between the privacy you want and the light you keep. We look at the sightlines from the windows and the seating area rather than defaulting to the tallest option, and where a boundary is shared we talk through what you need to agree with the neighbour before we start.

Trellis or a decorative top can add height and screening without the solid mass, and without the wind load, of a taller boarded fence.

### Posts, depth and gravel boards
Post depth is set by panel height and how exposed the run is. Under-setting is the single most common failure, because there is no way to correct it later without lifting the fence again.

A gravel board keeps the boarding clear of soil and standing water so the bottom of the fence is not permanently wet. It also gives a clean, level line at the base and can be replaced on its own years later.

### Sloping runs and retaining
On a falling boundary the run is stepped in even increments rather than raked to follow the ground, which keeps the top line looking deliberate and avoids odd triangular gaps at the base.

Where there is a genuine level difference between gardens, that needs retaining, sleepers or a low wall, before the fence goes on. Because groundwork and timber retaining are our own work, both are quoted together.

Common questions

## Fencing Installation questions,answered straight
Anything not covered here, ask Shaun Brickell directly on 07757 559036.

How much does new fencing cost in Bolton? It depends on length, height, style, access and whether the old fence needs taking away, so we price on site. The visit and written quote are free and the price is fixed once agreed.

How long does a fence take to install? Most domestic runs are a day or two including strip-out. Longer boundaries, retaining or gates take longer, and the expected duration is set out in the quote.

Which type of fencing is best for privacy?Close-board or feather-edge, because there are no gaps and the boarding overlaps. If you want height without the full wind load of a solid fence, a trellis top is a good compromise.

Can you set the fence on a sloping boundary?Yes. We step the run in even increments and, where there is a real level difference between gardens, retain it with sleepers or a low wall first.

Can you reuse my existing posts? We would rather not. Old posts are usually the reason the fence failed, and hanging new timber on them puts the whole run, and the guarantee, at risk.

Do you fit gates as well?Yes, including side access and bin gates, hung to swing clear of paving and planting with latches that still work in winter.

Will you take the old fence away?Yes, strip-out and disposal are included in the fixed price, so there is no old timber left stacked in your garden.

What guarantee comes with the work?A 10-year guarantee on our workmanship, and we carry £2 million public liability cover on every job.

How do payments work?A 25% deposit secures your slot and covers materials, with the balance due on completion once you are happy with the finished run.

Which areas do you cover?Bolton, Horwich, Westhoughton, Farnworth, Kearsley, Little Lever, Blackrod, Bury, Radcliffe, Atherton, Chorley and the wider Greater Manchester area.
