What decides whether a deck still feels solid in year eight is the frame: joist spacing, the posts or bases carrying it, how it is fixed back to any wall, and whether air can move underneath. We build ground-level decks, raised decks and small platforms, in treated softwood or composite board. Both sit on the same standard of frame: the difference is upkeep and cost, not structure. Joists spaced too far apart give that springy feel underfoot and eventually sag. Frames sitting directly on soil, or boxed in so tightly that no air moves, hold moisture against the timber and rot from the hidden side, long before the visible surface looks worn. Fixings matter as much. Nailed boards work loose and lift; untreated cut ends draw water in; and a frame not properly restrained where it meets a wall or a step will move seasonally until the joints open. In detail ## Timber against composite, frames and level changes How we specify a deck that is still tight and level years later. ### Treated timber decking Pressure-treated softwood is the cost-effective choice and has a warmth that composite cannot quite match. It does ask something of you: an occasional clean and a re-treat to keep the colour and shed water, otherwise it silvers off and roughens. Grooved or textured profiles help with grip in shade. Whatever the profile, every cut end gets treated before fixing, because that raw end grain is where water gets into the timber. ### Composite decking Composite boards cost more up front and give it back in upkeep: no annual treating, no splinters, stable colour and better grip when wet. They suit shaded gardens, family use and anyone who does not want a maintenance job every spring. Composite is less forgiving of a poor frame. It needs the manufacturer's joist spacing, correct expansion gaps at ends and edges, and the right clips or screws; get those wrong and boards distort or squeak. ### Frames, ventilation and drainage The frame is built to the board's required joist spacing, carried on solid bearing points rather than sitting on soil, and kept clear of the ground so air can move under it. Where a deck meets the house it stays clear of damp-proof course level. Water needs to run off and away.
