Overview

## What commercial landscaping covers
Commercial work is the same trades as our domestic gardens, artificial grass, paving, groundwork, drainage, fencing and timber, specified for far heavier use. Play areas, outdoor learning spaces, entrances, paths, courtyards and staff or parking areas all take more traffic in a week than a domestic garden takes in a year.

That changes the specification rather than the process: denser, harder-wearing grass, deeper build-ups where loading demands it, drainage sized for the area, and detailing at edges and junctions that stands up to constant use rather than looking good on handover day.

We have completed a large school project and multiple nursery installations alongside our domestic work. We are a small team of three, which means the people who quote your site are the people who carry out the work.

### Who it is for, and when

- Primary schools and outdoor learning areas
- Nurseries and early years play spaces
- Business premises, entrances and courtyards
- Landlords and managing agents with communal outdoor space
- Sites with worn, muddy or uneven grass areas
- Premises needing safe, low-maintenance surfaces year-roundBook a free site visit

What it costs to ignore

## What worn commercial outdoor space costs you
A worn play area is a closed play area. Grass that turns to mud in October stays unusable until spring, which means indoor break times, less outdoor learning and a facility a school has paid for but cannot use for much of the year.

Then there is risk. Uneven ground, trip lips where surfaces meet, standing water and rocking slabs on a route used by hundreds of feet a day are exactly the defects that generate accident reports. On a commercial site those are recorded, inspected and have to be answered for.

Repeated patch repairs are the expensive way to deal with it. Re-turfing a worn area every year, or re-levelling paving that was never based properly, costs more over a few seasons than doing it correctly once, with disruption to the site every time.

### Common mistakes we get called out to fix

- Specifying a domestic-grade grass pile for constant play traffic
- Under-specifying the sub-base to fit a budget figure
- Ignoring drainage on a surface that will be used every day, all year
- Leaving trip lips where new work meets existing surfaces
- Using contractors without adequate public liability cover
- Scheduling disruptive work in term time when holidays were available

Our process

## How we run a commercial landscaping job
The same sequence every time, so you know what is happening and when.

- Step 1

### Free site visit and survey
We walk the site, measure up, check ground conditions, drainage, access and how the space is used through the day.

- Step 2

### Specification and fixed-price quote
A written fixed price setting out materials, build-up, drainage and programme, with our insurance details for your records.

- Step 3

### Programming around your operation
We agree timing and phasing, holidays or closure periods where possible, plus access routes and how the working area is kept separate from users.

- Step 4

### Groundwork and drainage
Excavation, muck away, compacted sub-base in layers and falls set for the area, sized for the traffic it will take.

- Step 5

### Surfacing and finishing
Hard-wearing artificial grass, paving or timber installed with edges, junctions and thresholds detailed flush and safe.

- Step 6

### Handover and guarantee
Site cleared, work walked with you and signed off. Balance on completion, 10-year workmanship guarantee, £2 million cover in place throughout.

What you get

## The difference it makes

### Usable all year
Free-draining surfaces mean outdoor space stays open through winter instead of being written off as mud from autumn.

### Specified for real traffic
Denser grass piles and deeper build-ups where they are needed, so the surface holds its shape under constant use.

### Safer for users
Even levels, flush junctions, no trip lips and no standing water on routes used by hundreds of people a day.

### Predictable budget
One fixed written price covering groundwork, drainage, materials and labour, with no variations appearing mid-job.

### Minimal disruption
Work programmed around your opening hours or holidays, with a small team, defined access and the site cleared behind us.

### Documented cover
£2 million public liability cover and a 10-year workmanship guarantee, both provided in writing for your files.

In detail

## Specifications for schools, nurseries and business premises
Commercial surfaces are specified around traffic, safety and maintenance rather than appearance alone.

### Artificial grass for play and learning areas
Play areas need a shorter, denser pile that recovers under repeated traffic instead of flattening along the routes children run. Colour and pile height are chosen for durability first, with appearance following, because a flattened lawn looks worse than a modest one that holds up.

Perimeter detailing matters more than in a domestic garden. Edges are fixed along their full length so nothing lifts where dozens of small feet cross the same line every day.

### Base build-ups for constant use
Build-up depth is set by loading and formation. A play area, a pedestrian route and an area taking delivery or maintenance vehicles are different specifications, and clay formation increases the depth needed in each case.

Compaction in layers is non-negotiable on commercial work, because a settling base on a daily-use surface becomes a defect report rather than an inconvenience.

### Drainage for larger areas
A bigger catchment means more water and a more considered discharge route: falls across the area, linear channels where levels are tight, and gullies connected into existing site drainage.

On Bolton's clay ground, standing water is the usual reason a commercial grass area fails. Designing the route off the plot is what keeps the space open in February.

### Paving, paths and access routes
Pedestrian routes and entrances are specified for grip, evenness and durability, laid on a full bed with restrained edges rather than spot-bedded. Vehicle areas take block paving with a deeper base and haunched edge course.

Where new paving meets existing surfaces, thresholds are detailed flush so there is no lip on a busy route, one of the most common trip defects on commercial sites.

### Boundaries, fencing and timber
Boundaries on a school or nursery site are about security and robustness: posts set for exposure, gates hung to work reliably under daily use, and no gaps at the base.

Raised beds and planters suit outdoor learning and growing areas, giving planting depth over hard surfaces at a height that is easy for children to reach.

### Working on an operational site
The practical side matters as much as the build: access route agreed, working area kept separate from users, materials stored where they do not obstruct, and the site left clean at the end of each day.

Where possible we programme school and nursery work into holidays or closure periods. As a team of three, mobilisation is straightforward and the same faces are on site throughout.

### Insurance, guarantees and paperwork
We hold £2 million public liability cover, provided in writing before work starts, and our workmanship carries a 10-year guarantee. Any artificial grass also carries its 10-year manufacturer guarantee, passed on to you.

Payment terms are the same as our domestic work: a 25% deposit to secure the slot and cover materials, balance on completion.

Do you work with schools and nurseries?Yes. Alongside domestic gardens we have completed a large school project and multiple nursery installations across Greater Manchester.

How much does commercial landscaping cost?It depends on area, specification, ground conditions, drainage and access. We survey the site and provide a free written fixed price you can budget against.

What insurance do you carry?£2 million public liability cover, in place on every job. We provide the details in writing for your records before work starts.

Can work be done outside opening hours or in the holidays?Where the programme allows, yes. We agree timing and phasing with you up front and, for schools and nurseries, aim to work in holidays or closure periods.

How long does a commercial project take?It depends on area and how much groundwork and drainage is involved. The expected duration and any phasing are set out in the quote so you can plan around it.

Is artificial grass hard-wearing enough for a play area? With the right specification, yes, a shorter, denser pile on a properly compacted, free-draining base. That combination is what keeps a play area open through winter instead of closing it as mud.

What guarantee do we get?A 10-year guarantee on our workmanship, plus the 10-year manufacturer guarantee on any artificial grass, passed straight on to you.

Do you provide method statements or risk assessments?Tell us what your site requires at the quote stage and we will confirm what we can supply. We hold £2 million public liability cover and can provide those details in writing.
